Dr. Abay is a graduate of the Addis Ababa University School of Medicine in Ethiopia. He completed his internal medicine training and gastroenterology postdoctoral fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center, in New York where he also served as Chief Medical Resident. There he received The Weingarten Award for Outstanding Medical Resident. Dr. Abay is board certified in Gastroenterology.
Dr. Abay is Chief of Endoscopy at William W. Backus Hospital and chairman of Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) of Eastern Connecticut Endoscopy Center. He is highly focused in ensuring high quality care to all patients by adhering to nationally recognized bench marks.
Dr. Abay is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association, American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American Medical Association, Connecticut Medical Society and currently serves as Chairman of the Medical Ethics Committee of the New London County Medical Association.
Dr. Abay is fluent in English, Amharic and Tigrigna.
Dr. Abay was named Connecticut Magazine’s Top Doc in Gastroenterology for 2016 & 2017.
